Week Seven '4A' Preview

Now let's take a look at our 4A games this weekend...

1st District
--Greenwood @ Christian County
--Graves County @ Warren Central
This big district game might determine who snags a home playoff game, although Marshall County will also be a factor in determining that position.
--Barren County @ Marshall County

2nd District
--Henderson County @ Grayson County
--Ohio County @ Daviess County
The winner here will be in good position to claim the fourth playoff spot in district two.

3rd District
--Central Hardin @ North Hardin
--John Hardin @ Meade County
The third district has been an overall disappointment this season, with John Hardin probably leading the way. A win in Brandenburg would go a long way in turning around the Bulldogs’ season.

4th District
--St. Xavier @ Manual
After falling to Trinity by 25 points, Manual has won two straight and now face a St. X team that is also coming off a loss to Trinity.

5th District
--Trinity @ Seneca
--Ballard @ Southern
After their upset victory over Shelby County last week, Southern could really make some noise with another upset win. Ballard will be a tougher chore though.
--Fern Creek @ Oldham County
--Shelby County @ Eastern
An overtime loss to Southern puts their playoff fortunes in jeopardy, so Shelby County can’t afford another slip-up to a lower-tier team from the 5th district.

6th District
--Conner @ Dixie Heights
--Ryle @ Boone County
With Dixie Heights sitting at 2-0 in district play, the winner of this game will become the Colonels’ top threat in the 6th. Ryle has been rolling lately, but the Rebels will be ready for their rivals.
--Simon Kenton @ Holmes
SK has dropped their first two district games, including a heartbreaking triple overtime loss last week. To find a playoff spot, they must win at Holmes this week.
--Campbell County @ Scott

7th District
--Scott County @ Bryan Station
--Henry Clay @ Woodford County
What could have been for Woodford County, which led Lafayette by 10 in the second half before the game was moved back to Monday. Now Henry Clay comes calling, and that’s not been good news for Blue Devil opponents.
--Lafayette @ Tates Creek
Courtesy two exciting wins last Monday, the Generals and the Commodores will square off in an undefeated classic on Friday. The winner will be Henry Clay’s last challenger in the tough 7th district.

8th District
--North Laurel @ George Rogers Clark
With Madison Central floundering and Lincoln County surging, many have been ignoring the GRC Cardinals, yet they sit at 3-2 overall with a 1-0 district record.
--Madison Central @ South Laurel
The Indians flirted with danger last week against Whitley County, and now they must travel to London to face the Cardinals, which are looking to bounce back from the spanking Lincoln County gave them last week.
--Whitley County @ Montgomery County

And one more game of interest...

--McCreary Central @ Lincoln County
How about those Patriots? The Lincoln County Patriots are on a roll, and they should continue that roll this week while playing independent McCreary Central.

Game of the Week
--Male @ Pleasure Ridge Park
Who will be the won to challenge St. X in the 4th district? Male seems to be the obvious answer, but PRP is coming off a nice win against 3A Central. There’s little doubt what the most anticipated game in the state will be on Friday.

Week Seven '3A' Preview

Sorry for the delay. Here's our district games of note...

1st District
--Paducah Tilghman @ Madisonville-North Hopkins
Sitting at 0-5, the Blue Tornado are looking to turn around their season in a hurry. Madisonville will be a difficult game to get that first win, as the Maroons are a solid 3-3 on the year.
--Hopkinsville @ Union County

2nd District
--Adair County @ Franklin-Simpson
--Breckinridge County @ Logan County

3rd District
--Bullitt East @ Fairdale
Any playoff shot for Fairdale ends with a loss to Bullitt East. East is in a four-way chase for that second position in the district, as Central seems to have captured the championship already.
--Central @ Waggener
--Doss @ Atherton
--Jeffersontown @ Valley
The Vikings have been a pleasant surprise in the 3rd district, as they stand at 3-1 with the only loss coming to Central. A loss to Jeffersontown would seriously hurt their playoff chances though.

4th District
--Southwestern @ Boyle County
It's time to see if Boyle County is better than their 1-4 record indicates. Despite some rough scheduling, can the Rebels make the plays down the stretch to pull out a win against a good Southwestern team?
--Russell County @ Marion County
--Taylor County @ Pulaski County

6th District
--Lexington Catholic @ East Jessamine
While many (including me) ceded the district championship to Catholic after their win over Franklin County, East Jessamine might have something to say about that. The Jaguars stand undefeated in district play.
--Franklin County @ West Jessamine
--Bourbon County @ Harrison County
--Western Hills @ Anderson County

7th District
--Rockcastle County @ Clay County
Clay County raced out to a 5-0 start, but many question how good this team really is after considering their schedule. A win over Rockcastle County would give Clay County the win it needs to become legit.
--Madison Southern @ Bell County
It's a dangerous game for Bell County, who might have one eye on Madison Southern and one eye on the Rockcastle County/Clay County ballgame.
--Knox Central @ Perry County Central

8th District
--Greenup County @ Ashland Blazer
With a near-certain win over Greenup County, Ashland Blazer is one week closer to their dynamic October 20th showdown with Johnson Central.
--Mason County @ Boyd County

Other games of interest...

--Bullitt Central @ North Bullitt
Both Central and North step out of district play this week to battle in this county rivalry. North Bullitt might need a break from the vicious 3rd district, as they've lost two of three.

--Evangel Christian @ Letcher County Central
The Cougars look to pick up their third win of the year as they too step out of district for a week.

Game of the Week
--Warren East @ Bowling Green
Much has been made by Warren East fans about how they will topple the Purples. The stats look good for East: they are averaging 50 points per game and are allowing only 12.8. However, the combined records of their five victims is 7-20. It is not impossible, but it will be difficult for Warren East to win tomorrow night.

Week Seven '2A' Preview

Before we start, let's look at some scores from this weekend's makeup action...

--Dixie Heights d. Simon Kenton 37-34 (3 OT)
--Mayfield d. Paducah Tilghman 14-7 (OT)
--Lexington Catholic d. Harrison County 45-23
--Tates Creek d. Dunbar 17-14 (OT)
--Bethlehem d. Louisville Holy Cross 25-20
--Lafayette d. Woodford County 31-27

Now, let's look ahead to this weekend's action in Class 2A...

1st District
--Heath @ Trigg County
Can Trigg County salvage the season? Their quest begins with a district game against the Heath Pirates.
--Lone Oak @ Webster County
--Reidland @ Muhlenberg South

2nd District
--Monroe County @ Butler County
--Glasgow @ Edmonson County
Coming off their first win of the season, Glasgow will be looking for a critical district win in Brownsville. The loser will likely face elimination against Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the playoffs.

3rd District
--Western vs. DeSales (at Iroquois)
--Larue County @ Christian Academy-Louisville
With Washington County looking very strong, Larue County cannot slip here if it wishes to contend for the #2 spot in the district.
--Moore @ Elizabethtown
--Washington County @ Shawnee

5th District
--Mercer County @ Newport
If there's a team remaining on the Titans schedule that can beat the best team in 2A, it would be district rival Newport, but chances are the upset won't happen.
--North Oldham @ Lloyd Memorial
--Spencer County @ Henry County

6th District
--Russell @ West Carter
Chalk up yet another district win for Russell? Perhaps, but West Carter is 4-2 on the year and has won their first three district games.
--Morgan County @ Powell County
--Estill County @ Fleming County
--East Carter @ Lewis County

7th District
--Cawood @ Breathitt County
--Leslie County @ Knott County Central

8th District
--Pike County Central @ Belfry
Three other teams remain unbeaten in district play besides Belfry, but the Pirates are poised to cut it to two with a win here over Pike Central.
--Sheldon Clark @ East Ridge
--Prestonsburg @ Magoffin County

Other games of interest...

--Corbin @ Middlesboro
Corbin is looking for some more positive momentum as it heads into its three-team district schedule, but finding it in Middlesboro will be a challenge.

Game of the Week
--Caldwell County @ Fort Campbell
With Trigg County out of the picture, this looks to be for a seasonal district championship. Fort Campbell will be tough to beat at home, but Caldwell County has it rolling after a win over the tough Wildcats of Trigg.

Other '2A' games: Muhlenberg North @ Todd County Central, Shelby Valley @ Grundy (VA)

Week Seven 'A' Preview

Well week six turned into a big mess, so we're gonna go ahead and press forward with the week seven previews. Keep an eye on the KHSAA scoreboard for week six results as they come through.

Consequently, there will be no power rankings this week as some games from the previous week have yet to be completed.

1st District
--Fulton County @ Mayfield
Mayfield should assert its district dominance here, as Fulton County has only seen two Kentucky opponents this season (Reidland, Lafayette). Plus, Mayfield is really good against Class A opponents.
--Ballard Memorial @ Fulton City

2nd District
--Metcalfe County @ Crittenden County
The Hornets must survive this road test if they wish to keep up with a hot Russellville team in the district standings.
--McLean County @ Caverna

3rd District
--Fort Knox @ Louisville Holy Cross
--Bardstown @ Campbellsville
It has all gone horrible wrong for Campbellsville in district play, including a big loss to KCD last week. Bardstown won't improve matters any.
--Kentucky Country Day @ Green County
Green County is making news in the 3rd, but overlooking KCD with Holy Cross looming next week wouldn't be too surprising.

4th District
--Danville @ Owen County
Advantage Admirals.
--Carroll County @ Trimble County

5th District
--Covington Holy Cross @ Dayton
Holy Cross should be good to go for a district championship game against Beechwood to close the year, but Dayton could surprise.
--Ludlow @ Bracken County

6th District
--Berea @ Lexington Christian
--Fairview @ Nicholas County
This is a critical match to see who contends for the #3 and #4 spot in the district standings.
--Bath County @ Paris

7th District
--Somerset @ Williamsburg
The Briar Jumpers look to cross out another district speedbump until they reach the roadblocks of Lynn Camp and Harlan to close the year.
--Lynn Camp @ Evarts

8th District
--Phelps @ Pikeville
Pikeville looks to be the favorite in a very weak 8th district.
--Allen Central @ Hazard
--South Floyd @ Jenkins

Other games of note...

--Casey County @ Bethlehem
Bardstown's other small school, Bethlehem, is 4-0 heading into a Monday match at home with Holy Cross. A 2A challenge from Casey County will be a good rest from the rigorous third district.

--Johnson Central @ Paintsville
The Apple Bowl, as it is, should be Central's for the picking. However, Paintsville is the home team, and anything can happen in a heated rivalry such as this.

Game of the Week
--Russellville @ Hancock County
While Russellville looks ahead to Metcalfe County, they can't afford to overlook Hancock County. A trip to Hawesville might prove painful to the Panthers as Hancock picked up their first win of the season last week against Butler County.

Weather Problems

Yeah, the weather sorta messed with everyone on Friday night. Here are some of the highlights from a dim evening of Kentucky high school football...

--Trinity "defeated" St. Xavier 10-0 in a rain-shortened event. More important from this game though was X running back Victor Anderson's ankle injury.

--Big district wins last night: Bullitt East, Caldwell County, Fort Campbell, Harlan, Lincoln County, Monroe County, Western, Woodford County

--Male vs. Owensboro will not be made up. Several games were stopped in progress and will be made up throughout the weekend.

More coming tomorrow.

The What-Ifs of District Play

Certainly, there aren't as many huge district games this weekend as were last, but there are a few that will definitely shape the way district play goes from here on out.

(A, 3) Louisville Holy Cross @ Bethlehem
If Holy Cross wins: Holy Cross cements themselves as a probable host of a playoff game. Only a trip to rapidly improving Green County may give them trouble. Bethlehem remains in the hunt for a district championship, but must survive both Green County and Bardstown to take the title.
If Bethlehem wins: The Eagles prove themselves to be one of the elite in Class A. An October 20th game at Green County will overshadow a titanic season finale at Bardstown. Holy Cross falls to playoff peril and must win out to ensure themselves a playoff game on the road.

(A, 7) Harlan @ Lynn Camp
If Harlan wins: The Green Dragons get their third district win and now look to be worthy of challenging Somerset for a district crown. The final week at Somerset will likely decide the district championship. Lynn Camp falls a game behind the leaders but will host Somerset a week before Harlan travels there, so the Wildcats may benefit from the Briar Jumpers looking ahead.
If Lynn Camp wins: The Wildcats now become the team to challenge Somerset. Evarts, Cumberland and Williamsburg remain on the schedule but will likely not be a factor. Harlan now must hope for a Lynn Camp loss and then beat Somerset to force a three-way tie for the district crown, provided none of the 7th's cellar dwellers pull an upset.

(2A, 1) Trigg County @ Caldwell County
If Trigg County wins: The district fades back to what it seemed it would be: Trigg County vs. Fort Campbell. The Wildcats face a tough Lone Oak team in Paducah to end the year, but they should host a home playoff game. Caldwell County must recover quickly for a road game at Fort Campbell. A win there would clinch them a playoff birth and perhaps a chance at a district title.
If Caldwell County wins: The Tigers play for a district championship next week at Fort Campbell. A Friday-the-13th home game against Webster County would be the only challenge remaining. The Wildcats should still make the playoffs, but chances of a home playoff game are now all but gone.

(2A, 2) Edmonson County @ Monroe County
If Edmonson County wins: The Wildcats all but clinch a playoff spot, and now only need a win at home over Glasgow next week to get a home playoff game. Given that win, they would play for a district championship on October 13th at Owensboro Catholic. Monroe County opens district play with a loss; a win next week at Butler County is now essential
If Monroe County wins: The Falcons begin to look ahead to a season finale with the Glasgow Scotties as the game in which will decide who plays at home in the playoffs. Edmonson County still has a chance though, but they must beat Glasgow next week if they wish to avoid Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the playoffs.

(3A, 2) Logan County @ Allen County-Scottsville
If Logan County wins: The Cougars look to be the mystery fourth playoff team in the district, but wins against Breckinridge County and Adair County are a must. A possible upset win looms October 2oth at Franklin-Simpson. ACS is all but eliminated from playoff contention. They would have to beat both Adair and Breckinridge and hope Logan County loses to both.
If Allen County-Scottsville wins: The Patriots look more and more like the team to beat for the fourth spot. An October 6th game in Columbia against Adair County is extremely dangerous. Logan County must hope for two ACS losses and run the table in their own district play, except perhaps for Warren East, in which they would lose to anyway.

(4A, 6) Holmes @ Ryle
If Holmes wins: Holmes, an unlikely candidate, becomes a leading contender for a district crown. Landmines are in place for the rest of the way though, and an undefeated run through district play is unlikely. Ryle would be just fine with this loss, but it is one less home game that they get when the games get real tough down the stretch.
If Ryle wins: The Raiders are the definitive favorite at 2-0 in this district. However, road games at Boone County and Simon Kenton will prove to be difficult. Holmes now falls back in the pack in the 6th district, but will still be a factor for a playoff position for the weeks ahead.

(4A, 7) Woodford County @ Lafayette
If Woodford County wins: The Yellow Jackets make a statement by going to 6-0 and look forward to hosting Henry Clay next week. A win against the Blue Devils make them the district favorite, and perhaps the regional favorite as well. Lafayette must recover for its Lexington-school stretch (at Tates Creek, Dunbar, at Henry Clay). The road to the playoffs would be a difficult one for the Generals.
If Lafayette wins: At 6-0 and 2-0 in the district, Lafayette goes from another team in the 7th district to one of the ones at the top. A gigantic matchup at Tates Creek is set for next week. Given a win there and then a home win against Dunbar, an October 20th game at Henry Clay would describe the district. Woodford County would do well to upset Henry Clay next week, but two straight district losses is the likely scenerio.

Seven That Shouldn't Lose

When I say "shouldn't," I mean that these teams would be better off if they won these games. It's not that they can't lose these games; some will, and will be punished for it...

--Newport Central Catholic (1-4, 0-1)...at Dayton
It wasn't a paralyzing loss last weekend, but Newport Central Catholic was probably supposed to beat Covington Holy Cross. Well they didn't, and now the Thoroughbreds face a big must-win game at Dayton. The Greendevils only loss came to 2A's Newport, who, ironically, is Catholic's only win on the season so far.

--Trigg County (4-1, 1-1)...at Caldwell County
Like Newport Central Catholic, Trigg County faced a big district test last week and lost. With Fort Campbell looking good, the Wildcats can't afford another district loss, but a trip to Princeton to take on the Tigers will be tough. Caldwell County stands at 3-1 and already owns a district win, and many consider them to be the darkhouse in the 2A's 1st District.

--Elizabethtown (3-1, 0-1)...at Western
E-Town was rolling along at 3-0, but the Panthers laid an egg after their open week by dropping a 15-0 game to district rival Washington County. Now Elizabethtown must beat district favorite Western if the Panthers look to avoid an 0-2 start to district play. A loss here puts their playoff hopes in definite jeopardy.

--Allen County-Scottsville (2-3, 0-2)...Logan County
An 0-2 start to district play was not unexpected for the Patriots, as Warren East and Franklin-Simpson both represent the best teams in 3A's 2nd District not named Bowling Green. But the Patriots must beat Logan County if they want a playoff spot for the first time in four years.

--Bullitt East (3-2, 2-1)...Doss
While it seems that Central is going to run away with the district championship, Bullitt East can still capture that home playoff game by finishing second in district play. A win over Doss, who is 2-0 in the district by the way, would go a long way in securing that bid.

--Fern Creek (1-3, 0-1)...Seneca
Many words can describe Fern Creek's season so far, but perhaps disappointing could be a good fit. After an opening win against Meade County, the Tigers have dropped three straight contests, including a disappointing district loss to Eastern. Playoff spots are always tough to come by in 4A, and a loss at home to Seneca would likely end Fern Creek's chances.

--Simon Kenton (3-1, 0-1)...at Dixie Heights
Three impressive wins to start the season were wiped away by a tough district loss to Boone County at home. Now Dixie Heights awaits Simon Kenton, who, in the incredibly wide open 6th District of Class 4A, must recover to beat if it wants a playoff spot. Falling to 0-2 in this district is not the way to clinching a spot for the playoffs.

Week Six '4A' Preview

District games for the big schools...

1st District Games
--Barren County @ Warren Central
--Marshall County @ Greenwood
The Gators picked up their first win of the season last week against Hopkins County Central, but they may not be favored to win another game until the season finale against Barren County.

2nd District Games
--Daviess County @ Apollo
Apollo is 5-0 on the season, and should be 6-0 after picking up a win against their cross-town rival Panthers.
--Grayson County @ Ohio County

3rd District Games
--Nelson County @ Bullitt Central

4th District Games
--Iroquois @ Butler

5th District Games
--Eastern @ Ballard
--Seneca @ Fern Creek
The loser of this game will fall to 0-2 in the district, and it'll be difficult for that team to recover to make a playoff spot.
--Southern @ Shelby County

6th District Games
--Simon Kenton @ Dixie Heights
SK won their first three games on the season, and Dixie Heights lost their first three. Both teams swapped fortunes during week one of district play.
--Scott @ Boone County
--Holmes @ Ryle
The winner of this matchup will go to 2-0 in district play, and probably have an inside track at a playoff berth.
--Conner @ Campbell County

7th District Games
--Bryan Station @ Henry Clay
--Tates Creek @ Dunbar
It's been a struggle at Dunbar, as the Bulldogs are 0-5 on the season. Tates Creek, on the other hand, is 4-0 and will be looking for their first district victory.
--Woodford County @ Lafayette
While Henry Clay gets most of the attention in this district at 5-0, two other 5-0 teams will square off Friday night in downtown Lexington. The winner of this game should be looking good come playoff time.

8th District Games
--George Rogers Clark @ Montgomery County
All of a sudden, the 8th District is wide open thanks to Montgomery County's upset of Madison Central. An Indian win here over GRC would throw this district into even more disarray.
--Whitley County @ Madison Central
--South Laurel @ Lincoln County

And for the rest of the show...

--Male @ Owensboro
Does the western side of the state have anything for the Louisville and Lexington schools? The Red Devils of Owensboro will look to prove their region's worth as they host one of The Big Three in a highly-anticipated game.

--Cincinnati Moeller (OH) @ Henderson County
Henderson County has taken four straight games, but their winning streak is in serious jeopardy against one of Cincinnati's finest teams.

--Wayne County @ Scott County
It'll be a battle of the Cardinals, but expect the Scott County Cardinals to rebound well after dropping a heartbreaker to Henry Clay.

Game of the Week
--Trinity vs. St. Xavier (at Papa John's Stadium)
You might have heard about it before. It's kind of a big deal. The winner (with apologies to Male and perhaps Henry Clay) becomes the favorite to win the state championship. Expect nothing but the best game of the year in the Pizza Pit.

Other '4A' hosted games: South Oldham @ John Hardin, Muhlenberg North @ Central Hardin

---
Power Rankings
1. St. Xavier
2. Male
3. Trinity
4. Henry Clay
5. Pleasure Ridge Park
6. Christian County
7. Scott County
8. Tates Creek
9. Apollo
10. Henderson County

Week Six '3A' Preview

Moving on to Class 3A games, let's examine some of the top district games going on this weekend...

1st District Games
--Union County @ Calloway County
It's the district opener for both teams. Both teams are 2-3 on the season. Sounds like it'll be a close game.
--Madisonville-North Hopkins @ Hopkins County Central

2nd District Games
--Adair County @ Bowling Green
Adair County showed some promise during week four with a win over Metcalfe County, but Bowling Green's a tad better than the Hornets.
--Franklin-Simpson @ Breckinridge County
--Logan County @ Allen County-Scottsville

3rd District Games
--Doss @ Bullitt East
Doss has won their first two district games, and are only one game behind Central in the 3rd District standings. A loss at Bullitt East would hurt their chances at catching the Yellowjackets.
--Jeffersontown @ North Bullitt
How about J-Town? The Chargers picked up a nice win last week over Waggener, and a win over the Eagles would eliminate North Bullitt from district championship competition.
--Fairdale @ Waggener
--Atherton @ Valley

4th District Games
--Russell County @ Taylor County
With Boyle County and Southwestern not exactly lighting it up, the winner of this game might sneak into a home playoff game, or more. The schedule hasn't tested the Lakers or the Cardinals, but they are a combined 7-3.

6th District Games
--Harrison County @ Lexington Catholic
Catholic is in control of the 6th District after a win at Franklin County, but the Knights can't afford to overlook a solid Harrison County squad.
--Anderson County @ Franklin County
Every district game is a must win now for the Flyers, who must have Catholic lose twice if they hope to play the Knights at home during the playoffs.
--Western Hills @ East Jessamine
--Bourbon County @ West Jessamine

7th District Games
--Letcher County Central @ Rockcastle County
--Knox Central @ Madison Southern

8th District Games
--Boyd County @ Johnson Central
How good is Johnson Central? Would they be a threat to Highlands in the playoffs? Those questions probably won't be answered until Central plays Ashland Blazer, but a convincing win over Boyd County is still important.

And for the rest of 3A's big games...

--Christian County @ Hopkinsville
Many believe Christian County will walk to the 4A state championship game, as regions 1-3 and 6 in 4A are, as compared with 4-5 and 7-8, weak. Hoptown is searching for respect after a tough start. This would be a nice win.
--Corbin @ Pulaski County
Corbin has struggled, but not as badly as Pulaski County. One of these teams will pick up a much needed win on Friday night.
--St. Francis DeSales (OH) @ Highlands
Toughest schedule so far this season? The Bluebirds would be a nice choice, as they've seen Dixie Heights, Conner, Southwestern, Cincy Elder, St. Francis DeSales and St. X.

Game of the Week
--Pleasure Ridge Park @ Central
Any other week, this would be the game to see in Louisville. Central is starting to seperate themselves in 3A's District 3. PRP is looking to place themselves in the St. X-Trinity-Male discussion. Much is on the line in this Louisville battle.

Other '3A' hosted games: Breathitt County @ Lawrence County, Rowan County @ Greenup County

---
Power Rankings
1. Bowling Green
2. Highlands
3. Covington Catholic
4. Central
5. Lexington Catholic
6. Ashland Blazer
7. Franklin County
8. Johnson Central
9. Bell County
10. Clay County

Week Six '2A' Preview

District Games...

1st District Games
--Trigg County @ Caldwell County
This will be a fine game to watch in Western Kentucky. Trigg County can't afford another district loss, but Caldwell County will be a very tough challenge, as they've jumped out to a 3-1 start, which includes a district win over Lone Oak.
--Lone Oak @ Fort Campbell
After a BIG win at Trigg County, Fort Campbell returns to action against district sleeper Lone Oak. The Purple Flash got back in the winning column last week with a win over Heath.
--Heath @ Muhlenberg South

2nd District Games
--Todd County Central @ Owensboro Catholic
--Edmonson County @ Monroe County
Edmonson County has notched two district wins already, and a win in Tompkinsville pretty much assures them a playoff birth. The Falcons, however, need this win to get their district season started on the right track.
--Glasgow @ Hart County
At long last, Glasgow should capture their first win. Of course, stranger things have happened than Hart County beating Glasgow in football.

3rd District Games
--Shawnee @ Larue County
While Western gets all the attention in the 3rd, Larue County must hold serve at home if it wishes to battle the Warriors in a winner-take-all district showdown on October 13th.
--DeSales @ Moore
--Christian Academy-Louisville @ Washington County

6th District Games
--Powell County @ Russell
The Red Devils won't be challenged again until it sees Belfry in the fourth round of the playoffs.
--West Carter @ Morgan County
--Fleming County @ East Carter
--Lewis County @ Estill County

8th District Games
--Sheldon Clark @ Prestonsburg
It's a critical match in the 8th District, as SC and the Blackcats may determine who hosts a playoff game in this matchup. Their records are reverse (SC 3-1, PB 1-3), but it should be a good one in Eastern Kentucky.
--Shelby Valley @ East Ridge

For the rest of the action, and there isn't much...

--Crittenden County @ Webster County
In the competitive 1st District, watch out for Webster County, which already has picked up two district wins on the year.

--Casey County @ Mercer County
It's not about who, but how much. Could Mercer County have been any better so far this season?

--Grant County @ Newport
Grant County has won three straight, but Newport will be a challenge on the road. However, will the Wildcats be looking ahead to next week, when district "titan" Mercer County comes calling?

--Bell County @ Leslie County
The Bobcats continue to look more like Rockcastle County's equal in 3A's District 7, but they'll step outside of their class this week to battle Leslie County. The Eagles have dropped two of three after winning their first two games this season.

Game of the Week
--Elizabethtown @ Western
After a puzzling loss to Washington County, E-Town now has the pleasure of traveling to Louisville Western. With a loss, E-Town falls to 0-2 in the district, and with a tough game yet to come at Larue County, the Panthers might be in playoff peril.

Week Six 'A' Preview

District season is in full swing now. Here's a look at some district contests to watch...

1st District Games
--Ballard Memorial @ Murray
Simply put, the winner here should be assured a playoff position.

3rd District Games
--Bardstown @ Fort Knox
--Campbellsville @ Kentucky Country Day

5th District Games
--Newport Central Catholic @ Dayton
After a stunning loss to Covington Holy Cross, Catholic must be careful with Dayton, which is a solid 4-1 on the season with wins over three 2A and 3A opponents.
--Beechwood @ Ludlow
--Bellevue @ Covington Holy Cross
After a big district win, Holy Cross must hold serve at home against Bellevue, a team that can't afford to go 0-2 in the district.

6th District Games
--Lexington Christian @ Bath County
With Raceland out of the way, Christian now can count off the games until they clinch the district championship. But Bath County is a sleeper in this district; could we have an upset on our hands?
--Berea @ Raceland
--Paris @ Fairview

7th District Games
--Harlan @ Lynn Camp
Given Somerset's early struggles this season, this game might decide who goes on to challenge the Briar Jumpers for the district title. Harlan already owns two district wins, while Lynn Camp is looking to climb back to .500.
--Cumberland @ Evarts
--Williamsburg @ Pineville

8th District Games
--Paintsville @ Phelps

Now for the rest of the action in Class A...

--Paducah Tilghman @ Mayfield
Despite the Blue Tornado's 0-4 record, it should be a good one in Western Kentucky. Mayfield's two losses have come to 4A opponents (Marshall County and Graves County).

--Danville @ Hazard
Good luck Hazard. Danville is the undoubted #1 team in Class A (the folks in Bardstown might argue otherwise), while Hazard is a solid 3-1, but their loss came to class rival Harlan.

--Garrard County @ Frankfort
Here's another good 3A vs. A matchup. Frankfort has dropped two straight, both games to 3A opponents incidentally (Franklin County and Mason County). Garrard County should be a good team for Frankfort to get back on the right track.

--Belfry @ Pikeville
It'll be a war in the mountains on Friday as Class 2A juggernaut Belfry heads to nearby Pikeville High School for a epic clash. Pikeville has run off three straight wins, but it'll be hard pressed to earn a fourth consecutive victory by beating the Pirates.

Game of the Week
--Louisville Holy Cross @ Bethlehem
After a devastating loss to Bardstown, Holy Cross must recover quickly in order to topple undefeated Bethlehem on the road.

Other Class 'A' hosted games: Reidland @ Fulton City, Butler County @ Hancock County, Whitehouse Hermitage (TN) @ Caverna, Pendleton County @ Owen County, Bracken County @ Trimble County, Betsy Layne @ South Floyd, Knott County Central @ Allen Central

Week Five Thoughts

District play got off to a roaring start this past weekend, and there were several district finishes that, at the very least, surprised me.

--Montgomery County came in winless against highly-ranked Madison Central, but the Indians of Montgomery gave their fellow Indians of Central a big surprise. In probably the biggest upset of the weekend, Montgomery County beat Madison Central 27-21. The 8th District of Class 4A is now wide open. George Rogers Clark hasn't been dominating, both the Laurels are solid, Lincoln County has surprised, and now Montgomery County proves they can be the predicted favorite Madison Central. Should be a fun district race to watch.

--Meanwhile, up north, parity is abound in Classes A and 4A. The biggest surprise came from Covington Holy Cross, which "upset" Newport Central Catholic 10-7. Catholic (like Boyle County) falls to 1-4 on the season. Holy Cross jumps to the district lead, but Beechwood will be a factor too, and Ludlow, Bellevue and Dayton can be contenders. But don't count out NCC yet. Up in 4A, District 6 is even more wide open. Ryle, Holmes, Boone County and Dixie Heights all won district openers, but Conner, Simon Kenton and Campbell County all could contend. It looks like only Scott will not be a factor in District 6.

--There's many districts out there that pretty much are decided by two teams, and in many instances, those two teams played this weekend. In Class A, Lexington Christian took down a very hot Raceland team. Also in Class A, Bardstown proved it might be Danville's match by taking care of Louisville Holy Cross. Central all but wrapped up its district (Class 3A, District 3) by sneaking past North Bullitt. Lexington Catholic scored another win for the Lexington schools by outlasting Franklin County. Finally, Henry Clay won one for the ages as the Blue Devils slid past Scott County. Most, but not all, of these games will be replayed in the second round of the playoffs at the game site of this week's winners.

Now some general thoughts from this weekend...

--Elizabethtown wasn't represented well this weekend. For one, Elizabethtown played flat in a 15-0 district loss to, of all teams, Washington County. North Hardin dropped a tough 10-3 decision to Henderson County. John Hardin played well with an undefeated Apollo team, but fell in the end 18-13. And Central Hardin lost to Iroquois 24-20. For this season, those four teams are a combined 7-11.

--Warren East plays Bowling Green in two weeks. I think the Raiders will play well against the Purples, but they'll still lose by 20+ points. Bowling Green is absurdly good.

--District 1 in 2A will be fun to watch. Webster County won their first two district games. Caldwell County is off to a great start. Lone Oak will be solid. Fort Campbell is highly ranked. And despite a tough loss to Fort Campbell this week, Trigg County will be back.

--Boyle County and Newport Central Catholic are both 1-4, but both will still make the playoffs and both will make deep runs once they get there. All the talk about Boyle County going south, it's bull. They've lost to Danville, Henry Clay, Mercer County and Lafayette. Two probable state champions and two VERY good 4A teams there.

--Speaking of Henry Clay, I think the Blue Devils can hang with The Big Three in 4A. As for PRP, well let's let the next three weeks decide: at Central, Male, at St. Xavier.

--Somerset picked up their first win on Friday against Cumberland. They might not lose again until the third round of the playoffs.

--KHSAA's move to push back the start of the football regular season is good and bad. Good: one less week to swelter through in August. Bad: one more week that overlaps the start of high school basketball.

The Big Games

Another thing you'll see on Fridays from now on are a profile of the big district games, but not so much a summary. What's the situation gonna be if Team A wins? Or Team B? The number of games previewed per week will vary...

(A, 3) Bardstown @ Louisville Holy Cross
If Bardstown wins: The Tigers become the top challenger to Danville in Class A. Trips to Campbellsville at cross-town Bethlehem would be Holy Cross's only shots at recatching the Tigers in the standings.
If Holy Cross wins: A trip to Bethlehem next week cannot be overlooked, but a win there would likely clinch a district championship. They don't have to make the trip to Campbellsville, but they do have to visit Green County.

(A, 5) Covington Holy Cross @ Newport Central Catholic
If Holy Cross wins: Holy Cross would control their own destiny in the 5th district. Next week at Bellevue might be challenging, but three easy district wins sets up a mammouth October 27th game versus Beechwood for the district championship.
If NCC wins: Central takes control of the district, but a September 30th game at home versus Beechwood would likely decide the district champion. A trap game at Bellevue on October 20th could throw a wrench into things.

(A, 6) Lexington Christian @ Raceland
If Christian wins: The district championship is likely awarded to Christian. Only an October 13th trip to Paris and a season finale at home against Fairview would likely pose any problems.
If Raceland wins: Same deal. Wins over Ashland Blazer and Lexington Christian now affirm Raceland as a state championship contender. Tough finish possible at home versus Fairview and then at Paris.

(2A, 1) Fort Campbell @ Trigg County
If Fort Campbell wins: It's likely a district championship for Fort Campbell. After this win in Cadiz, they return home for two tough opponents in Lone Oak and Caldwell County. Three of the last four are on the road, so potential upsets may arise there.
If Trigg County wins: A potential letdown looms next week at Caldwell County, who is off to a 3-1 start. Last two are on the road, including ending the season at Lone Oak. But like Fort Campbell, Trigg County should take the district with a win.

(3A, 3) Central @ North Bullitt
If Central wins: Central runs away with the district championship. They've already beaten Valley and Bullitt East, two of the other top contenders for the district crown. North Bullitt is the other, and they already have a district loss.
If North Bullitt wins: The third district is thrown into confusion. Doss would take the district lead as the only team without a loss (they are idle). North Bullitt now holds the advantage, and now would likely play for a district title on October 6th at Doss. Bullitt East looms however on October 27th.

(3A, 6) Lexington Catholic @ Franklin County
If Catholic wins: The Knights return to the "who's gonna challenge Highlands and Bowling Green discussion." The district championship would be sealed with a win over Harrison County at home next week.
If Franklin County wins: The Flyers become the district favorite but face a much tougher road. Only two of their remaining six district games are at home, and a season-ending game in Cynthiana against Harrison County will be interesting.

(4A, 6) Boone County @ Simon Kenton
If Boone County wins: The Rebels get a big win in this wide open district. By no means do they become the district favorite, but a road win over a tough SK team puts them at the top. Every game will be a challenge, but a season ender at Conner would be difficult if Boone is playing for a title.
If Simon Kenton wins: I'd put SK at the top of the district race. They remain the only undefeated team in Region 3. Two consecutive road games at Dixie Heights and Holmes will decide whether or not they contend for a district championship.

(4A, 6) Ryle @ Campbell County
If Ryle wins: The highest-ranked team in the 6th should become one of the favorites. The Raiders alternate home and away games until closing with Dixie Heights. Road games at Boone County and two weeks later Simon Kenton will challenge.
If Campbell County wins: This district becomes really crazy. Ryle should recover if they lose, but Campbell County instantly becomes a contender. Conner will be a tough test next week; a two-week stretch in October against Boone County and Simon Kenton will determine their fate.

(4A, 7) Henry Clay @ Scott County
If Henry Clay wins: The Blue Devils take a firm grip on the 7th district. Big games against Lafayette and Tates Creek are at home. Only Dunbar would provide any sort of test on the road.
If Scott County wins: Things get interesting. A Friday the 13th game at Tates Creek will be huge. Follow that up with Senior Night versus Dunbar and then a closer at Lafayette, and Scott County has their three-week stretch to see if they can best Henry Clay in the district for a second time. It will be tough.

District Do-or-Dies

We have reached week five of the eleven-week regular season, and district games are beginning to fill up the schedule. So starting this week, we'll look at seven teams that pretty much need to win their district game this weekend if they are to reach their district goals...

1) Lone Oak (2-2, 0-1)...at home vs. Heath
The Purple Flash are expected to contend for a playoff spot in 2A's 1st district. Last week, they dropped their district opener to Caldwell County 31-21. It seems Trigg County and Fort Campbell are locks for the playoffs. With only two spots open, a loss this Friday to Heath would all but eliminate Lone Oak from contention.

2) Edmonson County (3-1, 1-0)...at Todd County Central
With Glasgow and Monroe County down from past years, Edmonson County has an excellent opportunity this fall to host a playoff game. The Wildcats got off to a great start with a 42-0 win over Hart County, their first district opponent. Todd Central occupies the basement of the district with Hart County, and a Wildcat loss here would likely erase their chances of a playoff game in Brownsville.

3) North Bullitt (2-1, 1-1)...at home vs. Central
North Bullitt has two incentives to win this game: 1) Central has already defeated Bullitt East (and convincingly, I might add) and a win here would give them full control of this district; 2) Last week's upset loss at Valley puts North in a precarious position if they lose this game as well. Future road games at Bullitt East and Doss would be tough tasks if they were needed for a playoff berth.

4) Clay County (4-0, 0-0)...at Letcher County Central
Now it might be silly to put a team on here that hasn't played a district game yet, but consider: Clay County shares a district with Rockcastle County and Bell County. If they are to challenge those two teams for a district crown, games against lower-tier district teams like Letcher County Central need to be won.

5) Shelby County (2-1, 0-0)...at Oldham County
The race is on in 4A's 5th District for third place. Trinity is a lock to capture the district title, and Ballard should be able to win enough games to finish second. That leaves six teams to fight for two playoff spots. Shelby County figures to be one of the two teams in the hunt, as the Rockets were highly touted coming into the year. Oldham County is 1-3 and struggling; this needs to be a Rocket win.

6) Waggener (2-1, 0-1)...at Jeffersontown
Two weeks ago, Waggener dropped a 14-12 decision to North Bullitt. If they had won that game, their playoff chances would have been great. However, a loss Friday to Jeffersontown would almost bury their chances. Waggener faces a tough three-week stretch starting next week (Fairdale, at Central, at Bullitt East). Overlooking Jeffersontown would not be wise.

(7) Bellevue (2-1, 0-0)...at Ludlow
If you haven't noticed, the 5th District in Class A is pretty much stacked. There's Newport Central Catholic, Beechwood and Covington Holy Cross. And then there's Bellevue, which continues to lurk in the shadows of the 5th. If they are to make a move up the pecking order, a win at Ludlow is needed. The fun will begin for them next week, as they visit Covington Holy Cross.

Week Five '4A' Preview

First, the district games...

2nd District Games
--Owensboro @ Ohio County

5th District Games
--Trinity @ Southern
The Shamrocks should pick up their second district win this week, as they stomped Oldham County last weekend.
--Ballard @ Seneca
--Fern Creek @ Eastern
--Shelby County @ Oldham County
Shelby County has won two straight after dropping their season opener. For the Rockets' playoff chances, this is a must-win.

6th District Games
--Boone County @ Simon Kenton
Here's a great district matchup between two teams that have started hot and cold. Simon Kenton is 3-0 with big wins over Seneca and Covington Holy Cross. Boone County is 0-3, but the last two losses have come by a combined eight points.
--Ryle @ Campbell County
Ryle is moving up the kentuckypreps.com rankings, as the Raiders are now 19th. Campbell County, however, may offer a roadblock to Ryle's road to the top 15.
--Scott @ Dixie Heights
--Holmes @ Conner
Conner picked up a nice road win at Fern Creek last weekend. A district win over rival Holmes would be as equally nice.

7th District Games
--Dunbar @ Woodford County
--Lafayette @ Bryan Station
The Generals can't afford a letdown here after an exciting win over Boyle County last weekend. Every win in this district will be valuable.

8th District Games
--Montgomery County @ Madison Central
--North Laurel @ South Laurel
They both remain unranked, but that shouldn't detract from the excitement in London on Friday night. Besides the rivalry itself, the winner should be assured of a playoff spot.
--Lincoln County @ Whitley County
After upsetting Rockcastle County, the Patriots of Lincoln County must come back to earth quickly to take care of business against district rival Whitley County.

District Game of the Week
(7) Henry Clay @ Scott County
It seems the Blue Devils have played in many big games this season. This is their biggest so far, as the winner will be in the driver's seat in the 7th District. Look for an exciting game in Georgetown.

As for the other big games in Class 4A this weekend...

--Madisonville-North Hopkins @ Christian County
After a disappointing (but promising) four point loss at Henry Clay, the Colonels return to Western Kentucky. Awaiting them are the Maroons, who have nice wins over Fort Campbell and Ohio County in consecutive weeks.

--John Hardin @ Apollo
The Eagles of Apollo have raced to an impressive 4-0 start. Before district play begins, look for them to engage John Hardin in a great game in Owensboro.

--Meade County @ Manual
While many dismissed Manual as a contender, the Crimsons rallied last week to defeat a solid Warren Central team. They can build momentum for district play with a good win at home versus Meade County.

Game of the Week
--Henderson County @ North Hardin
While John Hardin heads west, North Hardin will stay put for an excellent matchup with Henderson County. The Trojans are looking to get back in the winning column after two straight losses; the Colonels look to push their three-game winning streak to four.

Other '4A' hosted games: Daviess County @ Warren Central, Murray @ Marshall County, Barren County @ Grayson County, Marion County @ Bullitt Central, Central Hardin @ Iroquois, Garrard County @ George Rogers Clark

Week Five '3A' Preview

Off we go, into the district games...

2nd District Games
Bowling Green @ Logan County
Allen County-Scottsville @ Franklin-Simpson
The Wildcats picked their first win last week over Russellville. They'll look for their first district win over the scrappy Patriots.
Breckinridge County @ Warren East

3rd District Games
Central @ North Bullitt
It'd be a fine two weeks if Central could take care of both Bullitt East and North Bullitt. In all likelihood, the district championship would be theirs.
Bullitt East @ Atherton
Valley @ Fairdale
The Vikings look to build off an impressive district win against North Bullitt.
Waggener @ Jeffersontown

6th District Games
Anderson County @ Harrison County
West Jessamine @ East Jessamine
Don't write off 0-3 West Jessamine as of yet, as they've played a very challenging schedule featuring all 4A teams.
Western Hills @ Bourbon County

7th District Games
Clay County @ Letcher County Central

8th District Games
Johnson Central @ Lawrence County
Central, very quietly, has reached the four-win mark quite easily so far this season. A trip to Lawrence County shouldn't prevent the fifth win.

District Game of the Week
(6) Lexington Catholic @ Franklin County
The 6th District Championship will likely be decided in this game. Franklin County has been incredibly impressive this season, but the state champion Knights shouldn't be overlooked. A nice win last week over Scott County fuels their chances.

And the others...

--Crittenden County @ Calloway County
Class 3A District 1 has been very bad so far this season, but the Lakers have an excellent chance to pick up a solid area victory over an A school that has beaten a 3A school already (Logan County).
--Greenwood @ Hopkins County Central
Like their district rival Calloway County, Hopkins Central should take advantage of scheduling and pick up a big win over a big school. Greenwood is just 1-3, but losses to Bowling Green and Ballard should be considered.
--Nelson County @ South Oldham
After defeating Bullitt East in week one, Nelson County has dropped three straight. A win at surging South Oldham (3-1 record) would be a nice boost heading into district play.
--Frankfort @ Mason County
Frankfort heads east after being doubled up by rival Franklin County. Mason County has won three straight after dropping their season opener to Lafayette. This should be a good one on the Ohio River.

Game of the Week
--Southwestern @ Highlands
So what if Highlands has lost two straight? Consider the opponents: Cincinnati Elder and Louisville St. Xavier. Not exactly cupcake material there. Southwestern is no cupcake either, and the Bluebirds can't afford a letdown in this great matchup.

Other '3A' Games of note: Pendleton County @ Hopkinsville, Adair County @ Taylor County, Wayne County @ Russell County, Leslie County @ Grant County, Rowan County @ Madison Southern, McCreary Central @ Knox Central, Knott County Central @ Perry County Central (at Hazard), Wheelersburg (OH) @ Boyd County, South Point (OH) @ Greenup County

Week Five '2A' Preview

It’s pretty much district game time in Class 2A. Let’s see what district games will entertain us on Friday night…

1st District Games
--Webster County @ Reidland
--Heath @ Lone Oak
Two Paducah-area rivals square off in a game that could determine who’s going to the playoffs and who’s staying home.

2nd District Games
--Owensboro Catholic @ Butler County
The Aces got back to their winning ways last week with a win over 4A’s Daviess County; they can establish their district position with a big win in Morgantown.
--Edmonson County @ Todd County Central

3rd District Games
--Western @ Christian Academy-Louisville
One of 2A’s powers begins their district campaign Friday night, as the Western Warriors should pick up an easy win against the Centurions.
--Larue County vs. DeSales (at Doss)
--Washington County @ Elizabethtown
E-Town is a very quiet 3-0 so far; a win is needed here to set up a titanic battle next week at Western.
--Moore @ Shawnee

6th District Games
--Morgan County @ Russell
It looks like Russell will, once again, take the 6th District with relative ease. Their top challenge may come from Morgan County, although the Cougars have dropped their first three games.
--Fleming County @ Lewis County
--Powell County @ West Carter
--East Carter @ Estill County

7th District Games
--Middlesboro @ Cawood

8th District Games
--Magoffin County @ Belfry
Belfry’s run to a district championship might face more hurdles than Russell’s road, although Magoffin County isn’t expected to be one of those hurdles.
--Pike County Central @ Shelby Valley

District Game of the Week
(1st) Fort Campbell @ Trigg County
It will be Western Kentucky’s finest 2A matchup of the year. Fort Campbell is proving they can win with a Mr. Football on the roster, while Trigg County has rolled through four opponents by a 151-27 count.

Other games of note that aren’t of the district flavor…

--Bell County @ Corbin
The Bobcats hung around against one of 4A’s best—Henry Clay—two weeks ago. Corbin picked up their first win last week. It should be a fun game.

--Ashland Blazer @ Prestonsburg
After the Tomcats lost to Raceland to start the year, many said this game would be their first win. Following wins over Belfry, Russell and Portsmouth South (Ohio), Ashland Blazer is looking for their fourth victory.

Game of the Week
--Boyle County @ Mercer County
Despite being 1-3, Boyle County is still Boyle County. The Rebels have lost their last two games by a five point total. However, the road gets even tougher, as Boyle County faces a “titanic” test on the road at Harrodsburg, only against the new Mercer County.

Other games: Knott County Central vs. Perry County Central (at Hazard), Gilbert (WV) @ East Ridge

Week Five 'A' Preview

Week five already...here are the district games being played this weekend in A ball...

3rd District
Campbellsville @ Green County
Two teams with opposite records (Green County 3-1, Campbellsville 1-3) kick off their district schedule in Greensburg on Friday night.
Fort Knox @ Bethlehem

5th District
Covington Holy Cross @ Newport Central Catholic
Arguably the two best Northern Kentucky teams in A ball will battle it out Friday. NCC is better than their 1-3 record indicates.
Ludlow @ Bellevue
Bellevue is the sleeper in the 5th district. They need a home win here to keep pace with the predicted district leaders.
Dayton @ Bracken County

6th District
Lexington Christian @ Raceland
Raceland has already served up one big upset this year (Ashland Blazer). This wouldn't be an upset now, but Lexington Christian was favored in the district at the year's start.
Bath County @ Fairview
Nicholas County @ Berea

7th District
Cumberland @ Somerset
The Briar Jumpers are 0-4, but they should pick up win number one on Friday.
Lynn Camp @ Pineville

8th District
South Floyd @ Pikeville
Phelps @ Jenkins

District Game of the Week
Bardstown @ Louisville Holy Cross
Bardstown has gobbled up four wins in four weeks, all against higher class competition. Louisville Holy Cross is likewise 4-0 with only one win against a Class A team. It should be a dandy on Friday night.

And for the rest of the big 'A' matchups...

--Union County @ Mayfield
The Cardinals are coming off a disappointing 28-0 loss to cross-town rival Graves County, and the A power might be challenged along to way to winning again. Union County boasts a 2-2 record in 3A.

--Hart County @ Metcalfe County
It was a disappointing loss last week to 3A's Adair County that knocked the Hornets from the ranks of the unbeaten. They should return to their winning ways on Friday though, as Hart County has struggled so far this season.

--Oldham County @ Danville
The Admirals have left no doubt about who is the team to beat this season in A ball. Four solid wins over four solid opponents have pushed Danville to the top of the rankings. It will be extremely difficult for Oldham County to pull this upset on the road.

--Breathitt County @ Harlan
The Harlan Green Dragons are off to a great start on the season at 4-0, including two district wins over Evarts and Cumberland. They step out of district and class this week to face a stiff challenge at home from the Breathitt County Bobcats.

Game of the Week
--Covington Catholic @ Beechwood
This might turn out to be the best game between two Northern Kentucky opponents this season. Beechwood looks to bounce back from a shutout loss to Kettering, Ohio, while Covington Catholic looks to build off their big road win at Newport Central Catholic.

Other 'A' hosted games: McLean County @ Ballard Memorial, Muhlenberg North @ Russellville, Graves County @ Hancock County, Evangel Christian @ Caverna, Spencer County @ Kentucky Country Day, Henry County @ Carroll County, Jackson County @ Owen County, Betsy Layne @ Paintsville

Power Rankings
1. Danville
2. Bardstown
3. Beechwood
4. Louisville Holy Cross
5. Mayfield

9. Harlan

Week Four Thoughts

We still aren't to that part of the season in which district games comprise the entire schedule, but we are beginning to see more games that matter just a bit more than your regular Friday night football game. Here are the highlights from the district wars this weekend...

--Seven of the nine teams in 3A's 3rd District have played two district contests (Waggener and Atherton are the exceptions). Only two of the seven have jumped out to a 2-0 start. To no one's surprise, Central is 2-0 thanks to a 56-16 pounding of Bullitt East. But Doss has also jumped out of the gate quickly by winning district games against Jeffersontown and Fairdale. Look for both Bullitts--North and East--to be factors in this district chase throughout the year.

--Edmonson County and Butler County claimed their first district wins in 2A's 2nd District. With Monroe County and Glasgow a combined 1-7, it seems that playoff spots will be up for grabs in this district. The Wildcats and Bears are off to good starts with their Friday wins over Hart County and Todd County Central, respectively.

--It won't be a matter of who, but how much in 4A's 5th District, where the Trinity Shamrocks seem poised once again to run away with the district championship. They started their district march Friday with a 56-0 win at home versus Oldham County.

Now, for some other matters that we saw this weekend...

--Keep an eye on both North and South Laurel in 4A's 8th District. The Jaguars have won two straight after dropping their first two, but it's South Laurel that might bear watching more. Consecutive victories over Corbin and Southwestern prove the Cardinals could give Madison Central a run in the 8th District. Of course, one of these teams' winning streaks will be halted Friday, as they play each other at South Laurel.

--Looking for a game of the week? You would have done well to look around Lexington. Scott County wasn't quite good enough for Lexington Catholic, as the Knights took the heavily-anticipated contest 43-36. Henry Clay and Christian County engaged in a track meet with the Blue Devils coming out on top 50-46. Then there was Lafayette, which used the leg of Jake Stephens to boot themselves over struggling Boyle County 36-33.

--Of our nine 0-3 teams of a week ago, four won their first game, four lost their fourth game and one was idle. Campbellsville got back in the winning column with a win against lowly Pulaski County. Franklin-Simpson clawed out a one-point win at Russellville. Corbin got off the losing train with a win over Lexington Christian, and Owensboro Catholic blew away Daviess County. However, Glasgow (to Bardstown), Paducah Tilghman (to Henderson County), Dunbar (to Ryle) and Somerset (to Danville) all continued to lose. Dixie Heights did not play.

--There were a few scores that really surprised me from Friday night. Manual hadn't shown much promise this season, but a win over highly-ranked Warren Central will do wonders. What's wrong with the Dragons? Lincoln County "upset" Rockcastle County after the Patriots jumped to an early lead. Great win for Lincoln County; can they contend with Madison Central in the 8th? Both John Hardin and North Hardin fell to 4A opponents Owensboro and Pleasure Ridge Park, respectively. I expected one of those Hardin schools to pick up a win.

--If I had to guess right now, here would be your state championship matchups...

A: Danville vs. Beechwood
2A: Mercer County vs. Russell
3A: Bowling Green vs. Highlands
4A: Owensboro vs. St. Xavier

Honestly (and I think everyone would agree with this), the 4A state championship will be decided in the third round when the winner of St. Xavier/Male plays Trinity.

--Kentucky finished 8-3 against out-of-state competition this week (two Saturday scores not reported).

An Out Of State Look

After some reflection, I've realized that I've done a horrible job at profiling games featuring Kentucky teams and out-of-state teams, especially those taking place outside the wonderful state of Kentucky. So, without further ado, here's a look at some out-of-state games this weekend...

--Sheldon Clark @ Fairland, OH
This is the third game of the season for the Fairland Dragons of Proctorville, Ohio. For your information, Proctorville is found on the Ohio River just northeast of Huntington, West Virginia. The Dragons should be tested by Sheldon Clark, which has won its first three on the season.

--South Fulton, TN @ Fulton City
The Bulldogs of Fulton City start their season with four games against out-of-state opponent. This is the third and final game against a team from Tennessee. One thing to note: Fulton County beat South Fulton (TN) by a 56-18 count in week one.

--Lake County, TN @ Fulton County
A week after a curious trip to Lafayette (which ended with a 45-0 loss) the Pilots look to get back on a winning track. After failing to score last week, Fulton County was averaging 56.5 points per game. They should be able to score against the squad from Tiptonville, Tennessee.

--Memphis Ridgeway, TN @ Hopkinsville
The Tigers are 0-2 with quality losses to Male and Mayfield. In order to pick up that first win, Hoptown will have to race past the Roadrunners, which captured a Tennessee football state championship in 2002.

--Beechwood @ Kettering Alter, OH
Considered one of the best teams in Class A, the Beechwood Tigers will travel out of state this week to take on Kettering Alter Knights of Ohio. Kettering Alter is the alma mater for former Notre Dame and Chicago Bulls guard John Paxson.

--Lee County, VA @ Middlesboro
Middlesboro's one trip out of state this season resulted in a resounding 42-7 loss at Knoxville Central in Tennessee. Virginia's Lee County should be a simpler test, and it should produce Middlesboro's third straight win.

--Ashland Blazer @ Portsmouth West, OH
The Tomcats of Ashland Blazer are on fire, as they've defeated 2A powers Belfry and Russell in consecutive weeks. Before district play begins, they take a trip outside Kentucky to take on Portsmouth West.

--Breathitt County @ Pound Valley, VA
Like their district rival Middlesboro, Breathitt County will take a trip outside the state for a game against a Virginia rival. The Bobcats are looking to recover from a loss to 2A power Western last week.

--Louisville Holy Cross @ Providence, IN
One of Class A's best will head across the Ohio, as the Cougars leave the Bluegrass for a game at Providence of Indiana. Keep in mind that Waggener beat Providence 13-0 in week two, and South Oldham will play them in Kentucky on October 6th.

--Midland Trail, WV @ Shelby Valley
Shelby Valley, which is located in Pikeville, has already played one game against a Mountaineer State foe this season. Two weeks ago, the Valley dropped a 48-43 decision to Matewan, WV. They'll be looking for a win over Midland Trail before facing district foe Pike Central next week.

--Oneida, TN @ Williamsburg
The final Kentucky-versus-the-world game of the week features Williamsburg, which has won their last two games by a cumulative total of 96-6. One of those wins came against Tennessee team Jelico, and they'd like to make it two and a row against Volunteer State teams.

---

Kentucky versus...

Tennessee: 8-9
Indiana: 4-3
Ohio: 2-7
Illinois: 0-1
West Virginia: 1-1

Total: 15-21

---

By the way, Clay County improved its record to 4-0 last night with a big 62-6 win at Knott County Central.

Week Four '4A' Preview

It's a BIG week in Class 4A football. First, the district games!

(2) Apollo @ Grayson County
The Eagles should take care of the Cougars in this district matchup.
(5) Oldham County @ Trinity
It's not a question of who, but of how much.

Now for the rest of the games in question...

--Mayfield @ Graves County
Heard it's a big game over in Western Kentucky. Graves County is rolling, as the Eagles have won their first three on the year. A tough test awaits tomorrow though, as A power Mayfield rolls into War Memorial Stadium.

--John Hardin @ Owensboro
Two weeks after a surprising loss at Larue County, John Hardin will look to turn it around against the Owensboro Red Devils. The task is a difficult one however, as Owensboro has notched impressive wins against Owensboro Catholic and Meade County.

--Paducah Tilghman @ Henderson County
It's 0-3 and counting for the Blue Tornado of Tilghman, and their prospects don't look much better this week. The Colonels step outside of district play after demolishing Daviess County last week in a most impressive fashion.

--Pleasure Ridge Park @ North Hardin
The Panthers of PRP are often overlooked in the stacked 4th District with St. Xavier and Male leading the pack. They can get a bit of attention from me with an impressive road win in Radcliff against the tough Trojans.

--Warren Central @ Manual
It was an embarrasing blowout loss to Bowling Green, but Central can't take a week off here. Manual may not be the program they once were, but they still can compete. Let's see which team makes a comeback here.

--Male @ Ballard
This marks the beginning of a brutal three game road trip for the Bulldogs. This week: at Ballard. In two weeks: at Owensboro. In three weeks: at PRP. Win all three = top team in 4A? That won't be decided until October 20th when Male heads to X. Some road schedule.

--Boyle County @ Lafayette
Can the Rebels stop the bleeding? It's been a rough stretch for Boyle County after an opening win against Harrison County. Lafayette will be no picnic, as the Generals are 3-0, though their schedule hasn't been challenging.

--Southwestern @ South Laurel
The Cardinals are back on the radar following a big win against rival Corbin. But a win against tough 3A Southwestern would further South Laurel's chances in the tough 8th district, where Madison Central seems to be the favorite.

Game of the Week
--Christian County @ Henry Clay
What a great matchup here between one of the best from Western Kentucky and arguably the best from Central Kentucky. The Blue Devils have been rolling, and it will take a great effort from QB Keith Tandy among other Colonels to get the road win.

Other '4A' hosted games: Calloway County @ Marshall County, Monroe County @ Barren County, Boone County @ Meade County, Tates Creek @ Nelson County, Western @ Butler, Conner @ Fern Creek, Ryle @ Dunbar, Rockcastle County @ Lincoln County, Lynn Camp @ Whitley County, Harrison County @ Montgomery County

Week Four '3A' Preview

Here are 3A's district games during week four...

(2) Warren East @ Allen County-Scottsville
The Raiders have averaged an incredible 49 points per game so far. Can they keep that pace up against their first district foe?

3rd District Games
--Central @ Bullitt East
The regular season district championship could be decided here.
--North Bullitt @ Valley
The Eagles, led by sophomore running back Dalton Cissell, are off to a fast start and are looking for a key district win at the Valley Vikings.
--Atherton @ Fairdale
--Jeffersontown @ Doss
Doss is looking to go 2-0 in the district after defeating Fairdale last week.

(7) Letcher County Central @ Bell County

Some of the other top games in Class 3A action...

--Greenwood @ Bowling Green
The Gators got a big win last week against Ohio County, but now they face a more than forminable challege: a Bowling Green team that, finally healthy, stuffed Warren Central by 23 points.

--Washington County @ Marion County
The Knights of Marion County are off to a quick start this season at 2-1, including a win over Campbellsville. Washington County looks to recover from a big loss to Bardstown two weeks ago.

--Shelby County @ South Oldham
After an embarrasing beginning against Central, Shelby County turned it around last week against Whitley County. Now they travel to Crestwood to battle the undefeated Dragons.

--Scott County @ Lexington Catholic
Despite a rocky start, Lexington Catholic should be ready for the Cardinals in this great matchup. Catholic hasn't played since being smoked by St. Xavier; in fact, the Knights are the only team in the state which has only played one game so far.

--Frankfort @ Franklin County
Look for a high-scoring, entertaining matchup here in the state's capital. Frankfort, quietly, is 3-0 and looking for a big win. Franklin County, however, was more than impressive in wins over Somerset and Pulaski County.

--North Laurel @ Madison Southern
4A visits 3A here in this southeastern Kentucky matchup. North Laurel picked up a key victory last week in a win over 2A's Leslie County. Madison Southern notched their first win in week three over Letcher County Central.

--Bryan Station @ Johnson Central
Not many are talking up Johnson Central, who quietly has marched to a 3-0 start. Bryan Station isn't the best team Lexington can offer, but the Defenders should give Jim Matney and his Golden Eagles a good test before district play begins.

Game of the Week
--Highlands vs. St. Xavier (in Cincinnati)
It would have been Game of the Week in 4A as well, but Highlands should play as the home team here. Arguably the best team in their respective classes, the Bluebirds and the Tigers should give southern Ohio a good look at what Kentucky football can offer.

Other '3A' hosted games: Memphis Ridgeway (TN) @ Hopkinsville, Ohio County @ Madisonville-North Hopkins, McLean County @ Breckinridge County, Metcalfe County @ Adair County, Fort Knox @ Russell County, Owen County @ Grant County, Pendleton County @ Anderson County, Woodford County @ West Jessamine, Paris @ Bourbon County, Raceland @ Greenup County

Week Four '2A' Preview

Our district games this Friday for Class 2A...

(1) Reidland @ Trigg County
(1) Lone Oak @ Caldwell County
Big game for both teams as they likely chase the '3' position in the first district.
(1) Muhlenberg South @ Webster County
(2) Hart County @ Edmonson County
With Monroe County and Glasgow down, the Wildcats can make a move up the district, starting with a win over Hart County.
(2) Butler County @ Todd County Central
(8) East Ridge @ Belfry

As for the rest of the crowd...

--Daviess County @ Owensboro Catholic
The Aces have failed their first two tests against city competition, losing to Owensboro and Apollo. Will the third time be the charm for Catholic? Daviess County is looking to rebound from a district blowout loss to Henderson County.

--Mercer County @ Garrard County
If the first three weeks of the season are any indication, it may be a long night for the Garrard County Golden Lions. Mercer County has been Titanic so far, averaging 58 points a game and allowing only six points total.

--Bullitt Central @ North Oldham
4A Bullitt Central is looking for another quality win before heading into district play. All thoughts would say this game would be a win, as North Oldham has dropped their first three games of the season.

--Boyd County @ Russell
The Red Devils are coming off a rare loss, this to area rival Ashland Blazer in an epic triple overtime battle. Look for one of 2A's finest to return to form against Boyd County, which has already lost to 2A foe Sheldon Clark.

--Clay County @ Knott County Central
Don't look now, but Clay County is 3-0, joining district titan Rockcastle County. The Tigers would love to go into district play at 4-0, but the Knott Central Patriots should provide a tough test for the 3A school.

--Paintsville @ Prestonsburg
An old Eastern Kentucky rivalry fires back up Friday, as Paintsville, which already owns two district wins, visits the Blackcats of Prestonsburg. The home team here is still looking for its first win of the season.

Game of the Week
--Lexington Christian @ Corbin
After three consecutive losses to start the season, Corbin is in desperate need of a first win. Lexington Christian will serve as a tough test however, as the Eagles have won their last two after being smoked by Mercer County.

Other '2A' hosted games: Iroquois @ Shawnee, Southern @ Moore, Green County @ Wayne County, Taylor County @ Casey County, Ludlow @ Newport, Eminence @ Henry County, Jackson County @ Spencer County, Mason County @ Morgan County, Nicholas County @ Fleming County, Fairview @ Lewis County, Lee County (VA) @ Middlesboro, Perry County Central @ Leslie County, Clay County @ Knott County Central, Evarts @ Cawood, Lawrence Ounty @ Pike County Central, Midland Trail (WV) @ Shelby Valley, Betsy Layne @ Magoffin County

Week Four 'A' Preview

We're a third of the way through the regular season. Let's look at the Class A preview for week four (keep in mind that these games are hosted at the Class A schools)...

District Games
(3) Bethlehem @ Kentucky Country Day
(7) Harlan @ Cumberland
(8) Allen Central @ Pikeville
(8) Jenkins @ Hazard
(8) South Floyd @ Phelps

--Franklin-Simpson @ Russellville
The Panthers are on a roll, and after three weeks on the road, they come home to face a struggling Franklin-Simpson team. The Wildcats have dropped their first three games of the season and are looking for a quality win before district play.

--Glasgow @ Bardstown
Two traditional powers are heading in two opposite directions. The Bardstown Tigers are rolling along in Class A, winning their first three and staking a claim in the state championship chase. Glasgow, however, is 0-3 and looking as if they'll be on the playoff bubble all season.

--Pulaski County @ Campbellsville
Two 0-3 teams will hook up Friday night in Central Kentucky. Look for the Campbellsville Tigers here to pick up their first win, but it's never an upset when a bigger school beats a smaller school in my opinion. Well, at least not in this case

--Covington Catholic @ Newport Central Catholic
The Thoroughbreds' tough schedule continues with a home date with area rival Covington Catholic. Even though they stand at 1-2, Newport Central Catholic will be a force in Class A throughout this season.

Game of the Week
--Somerset @ Danville
This should be a good one. The Briar Jumpers, despite being 0-3, have lost two close games to top 3A competition. Danville is 3-0 and has managed to win two games over 3A foes by a total of five points.

Power Rankings
1. Danville
2. Beechwood
3. Mayfield
4. Louisville Holy Cross
5. Bardstown
6. Frankfort
7. Russellville
8. Raceland
9. Newport Central Catholic
10. Metcalfe County

Week Three Thoughts

Well it’s Labor Day, and we Americans are taking advantage by taking the day off…at least I am. Perhaps I need some extra time to get over that ballgame last night in Louisville, which was pretty depressing I must say. Anyway, there are nine teams across the Bluegrass that have plenty of work ahead of them. Here are nine teams that you wouldn’t expect to be 0-3…

Campbellsville: While district rivals Bardstown and Louisville Holy Cross have raced out to 3-0 starts, the Campbellsville Tigers have went the opposite way to start the year. However, the Tigers will have an excellent opportunity to right the ship this week against a struggling Pulaski County team.

Somerset: The Briar Jumpers have certainly tested themselves out of the gate, but three tough games have brought three losses, all of them to 3A teams. The road won’t get easier this week though, as Somerset heads north to take on Class A’s top team: Danville.

Glasgow: Of all the 0-3 starts, perhaps it is Glasgow’s that is most alarming. Blowout losses to Metcalfe County and Allen County-Scottsville, along with the first loss to rival Barren County since 1998, have caused alarm bells to ring among the Scottie faithful. It might be a long year for Billy Lindsey’s young team.

Owensboro Catholic: The defending Class 2A runners-up have run into trouble to start the season. A not-so-surprising loss to South Spencer, IN has been followed by losses to rivals Owensboro and Apollo. The Aces take on Daviess County next week, so the winless streak might be snapped this Friday.

Corbin: Meanwhile, Corbin has slipped out of the gate as well. Last Friday’s one-point loss to South Laurel sent the Redhounds to 0-3, this after losses to Rockcastle County and Oldham County. Corbin should be able to right the ship on Friday as they entertain Lexington Christian.

Paducah Tilghman: Everything’s Blue for the Tornado so far, as Tilghman has stumbled in their first three games. Despite being labeled a rebuilding year by many, the Blue Tornado scheduled tough to start the season and are still seeking that first win. It likely won’t come on Friday, as Tilghman travels to Henderson County

Franklin-Simpson: Warren East has caught many eyes with their 3-0 start, but district rival Franklin-Simpson has caught mine with their 0-3 beginning. Like Tilghman, the Wildcats have scheduled tough and failed to bring home the first win. A trip to tough Russellville may produce that first victory, or it may not.

Dixie Heights: The Colonels haven’t just started 0-3. They’ve been pretty bad while doing it. While only scoring 16 points so far, Dixie Heights has allowed 111 points to Highlands, Beechwood and Covington Catholic. The Colonels take this week off, and then they’ll battle Scott, a game they should win.

Dunbar: While 5 of 7 teams in Class 4A’s 7th District are still undefeated, the Bulldogs of Dunbar are, well, defeated. Once again, scheduling plays a chief role in this record, as Dunbar has lost to PRP, Madison Central and Tennessee power Montgomery Bell Academy. This week’s match-up with Ryle could give Dunbar that first win.

So to part from the negativity, let’s focus on Class A, which picked up several impressive victories this weekend. How about Mayfield? A week after getting nicked by Marshall County, the Cardinals came back to beat the Hopkinsville Tigers in a thrilling 35-34 classic. Then Bardstown, which is off to a quick 3-0 start, smashed cross-town rival Nelson County 28-0. It seems the Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with, as usual, in Class A. Other good wins came from Louisville Holy Cross (beat DeSales), Crittenden County (beat Logan County), Lynn Camp (beat Perry County Central) and Bethlehem (beat North Oldham).

And then there was Danville, taking advantage of the scheduling change and taking down rival Boyle County 35-33. The game was moved from Boyle County to Admiral Field, albeit that’s not a huge travel difference, the atmosphere most definitely favored Danville, and Class A’s top team took down the Rebels.

What teams in each class have been most impressive so far? We’ve talked about Danville in Class A already. The Admirals have scored big wins over Boyle County and Southwestern, along with a blowout win against Pulaski County. In review, Danville has three wins, all of them against Class 3A competition.

In 2A, the new superpower (at least for a year) looks to be the Titans of Mercer County. They’ve only played two games, but wins of 63-0 and 53-6 (over Lexington Christian and South Laurel, respectively) proves that Mercer County can beat schools small and large, and beat them convincingly. Outside of a September 15th date with Boyle County, the Titans should breeze through their schedule.

I think 3A’s most impressive team so far has a loss already. Ashland Blazer dropped their opening game to Raceland, but the Tomcats have rallied by slipping past two Class 2A superpowers: Belfry and Russell. While Ashland probably can’t run with either Highlands or Bowling Green, the Tomcats have been impressive since getting stunned by Raceland.

And in 4A, how about the Tates Creek Commodores? After a miserable 2005 campaign, Tates Creek has come out firing in 2006, winning their first three games over tough 4A competition. Wins over George Rogers Clark, Ballard and Madison Central cement the Commodores as a contender in the Lexington 4A district, but like Ashland Blazer, they have a ways to go if they wish to challenge 4A’s big three: St. Xavier, Male and Trinity.

District play doesn’t start in earnest until week five, but I will release my power rankings for each class as I do their week four previews.
