Seven That Shouldn't Lose
When I say "shouldn't," I mean that these teams would be better off if they won these games. It's not that they can't lose these games; some will, and will be punished for it...
--Newport Central Catholic (1-4, 0-1)...at Dayton
It wasn't a paralyzing loss last weekend, but Newport Central Catholic was probably supposed to beat Covington Holy Cross. Well they didn't, and now the Thoroughbreds face a big must-win game at Dayton. The Greendevils only loss came to 2A's Newport, who, ironically, is Catholic's only win on the season so far.
--Trigg County (4-1, 1-1)...at Caldwell County
Like Newport Central Catholic, Trigg County faced a big district test last week and lost. With Fort Campbell looking good, the Wildcats can't afford another district loss, but a trip to Princeton to take on the Tigers will be tough. Caldwell County stands at 3-1 and already owns a district win, and many consider them to be the darkhouse in the 2A's 1st District.
--Elizabethtown (3-1, 0-1)...at Western
E-Town was rolling along at 3-0, but the Panthers laid an egg after their open week by dropping a 15-0 game to district rival Washington County. Now Elizabethtown must beat district favorite Western if the Panthers look to avoid an 0-2 start to district play. A loss here puts their playoff hopes in definite jeopardy.
--Allen County-Scottsville (2-3, 0-2)...Logan County
An 0-2 start to district play was not unexpected for the Patriots, as Warren East and Franklin-Simpson both represent the best teams in 3A's 2nd District not named Bowling Green. But the Patriots must beat Logan County if they want a playoff spot for the first time in four years.
--Bullitt East (3-2, 2-1)...Doss
While it seems that Central is going to run away with the district championship, Bullitt East can still capture that home playoff game by finishing second in district play. A win over Doss, who is 2-0 in the district by the way, would go a long way in securing that bid.
--Fern Creek (1-3, 0-1)...Seneca
Many words can describe Fern Creek's season so far, but perhaps disappointing could be a good fit. After an opening win against Meade County, the Tigers have dropped three straight contests, including a disappointing district loss to Eastern. Playoff spots are always tough to come by in 4A, and a loss at home to Seneca would likely end Fern Creek's chances.
--Simon Kenton (3-1, 0-1)...at Dixie Heights
Three impressive wins to start the season were wiped away by a tough district loss to Boone County at home. Now Dixie Heights awaits Simon Kenton, who, in the incredibly wide open 6th District of Class 4A, must recover to beat if it wants a playoff spot. Falling to 0-2 in this district is not the way to clinching a spot for the playoffs.
